The town of Valldemossa is beautifully nestled in the Tramuntana mountains on the island of Mallorca. Its exact age isn’t 100% known, but it can be attributed to ~123 BC, making this historic town, (very) historic.

What Makes Valldemossa Special?

With its age, comes a lot of history. For classical music fans, Frederic Chopin spent a winter here in 1838 and wrote some iconic works alongside his writer, George Sand. Today, a museum can be found to commemorate their importance.

The town is also well-known for its well-preserved architecture, which dates back over a thousand years from the Moorish era.

How Do You Get There?

The drive to Valldemossa from Palma takes about 20 minutes. Renting a car is nearly a must to get around the island of Mallorca, and it’s no less a recommendation here as well. We did not know this going into our visit, but car rentals on the island are extremely affordable (we could get ours for ~ CAD 9/day).

The drive is by no means a difficult or dangerous one, but if you aren’t comfortable driving up to Valldemossa, guided tours are offered that typically leave from the city of Palma.

A note to drivers that the best view of the city is actually from a viewpoint on the way there (or on the way back) via the Mirador de Vallemossa observation area.

What Are the Places to See?

Valldemossa is a relatively small town, and most may likely get by with a ~3-4 hour stay, but some may also stay overnight to soak in the town’s charms.

Some of the highlighted places I’d recommend visiting in your time here are:

Places to Shop?

The main shopping area in Valldemossa is the Centre de Valldemossa area. There’s also a street market here every Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm, so stop by then to shop for your souvenirs!

Places to Eat?

We went to a lovely restaurant/cafe with an amazing view from their terrace, called Can Uetam. They offer snacks, coffee, and full entree courses, but we opted for lattes and a banoffee cake. Prices are slightly at a premium, but for the view offered, it’s worth it.

They also host a bed and breakfast if you wish to stay in this gorgeous town for longer!
